We Are Worldschoolers

Worldschooling Communities & Hubs

One of the great things about worldschooling is that no matter where you are almost never alone. Sometimes we travel with the specific intention of meeting up with other worldschoolers. They might be friends we’ve met around the world, or they might be strangers that we want to get to know. One great way to meet worldschooling folks is to go to worldschooling community.

There are two basic types of communities: Temporary and permanent. Temporary communities can be conferences, pop-up communities, retreats, short term learning communities, or even worldschool school. Permanent communities are ones that can always be found in a certain location. These have some worldschoolers that use it as a base of operations and some that come for a visit. Most often, the people in these communities stay for a longer period of time.

This compilation of communities around the world is separated into the two basic types with links to help you get to know what each community is like and whether or not it will be a good fit for your worldschooling family.

Project World School Family Summit

Project World School hosts a number of different types of temporary communities.

Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/groups/ProjectWorldSchoolFamilySummit/

Family Summits

These are designed as temporary community hubs where we gather in the spirit of community and co-create valuable learning experiences. The summits are designed as a forum for all; from veteran worldschoolers to those who are just starting out as a place to add to our collective wisdom, share experiences, challenges, and triumphs and support one another. The summits are a twice-annual event taking place in the early part of the year in or around Mexico and in the latter part of the year in or around Asia or Europe.

Family Summit Hubs

Project World School community members host a temporary worldschooling hub before and after the Project World Family Summit. There, families plan excursions, get together for playdates, and travel together. This pop-up community typically starts a week before the summit and lasts for about a week afterward and is coordinated by the summit attendees.

Teen Learning Communities

Teens and young adults collaborate in rich experiential and social learning. During the retreats, both natural and academic learning occurs through immersive cultural experiences while encouraging social learning, teamwork, and leadership. Participants create strong connections to other participants, the world around them, and the community through a rich collaborative environment.

They organize worldschooling travel/learning experiences with small groups of families. Community-building and learning exploration begins before traveling with group workshops

The World School

The World School started in January 2020, with the intention of creating a community for families who desire an alternative to the traditional schooling experience for their children. The way families are choosing to raise and educate their children is shifting and we are pioneering a new model of education to complement this change. We have been inspired by Peaceful/Respectful Parenting (RIE), Democratic School, Forest School, Waldorf, Sudbury, Reggio-Emilia, and worldschooling philosophies. These philosophies direct our staff in how they interact with our students.

Sharing My Home in Tanga

Come and explore a small Swahili town life on the Indian Ocean in Tanga. There is a three-bedroom house in a residential neighborhood where monkeys hang out in the mango trees in the garden and as you walk around the neighborhood and get a real sense of community. There is also have a two-bedroom beach house with its own private beach that you can be rent as well. We have lived here for 7 years and my children, ages 5 and 4, learn mostly at home. They spend lots of time outside exploring and playing with neighborhood kids as we have a school across the street with a large football field that is full of life in the evenings. This area is not very touristy but that’s not because of its lack of charm or things to do! We love sharing our life with other families especially those looking to stay for a month or more. Weekend trips to the lake, islands, beaches, or markets are all within an hour’s drive. Further afield there are national parks where you can go on a safari, hike in the mountains or discover local waterfalls. We work for a local non-profit children’s charity that always has administrative jobs that you could come and help out with or just come and sample life in Tanzania.
